A closer look at rhinoplasty in South Korea
Function & appearance

I want my nose to look better. I need it to work well, too.

Bring breathing symptoms into the first consultation and understand why appearance and airway assessment belong together.

Tell the surgeon about breathing symptoms before agreeing to cosmetic changes. Septoplasty, functional rhinoplasty and cosmetic rhinoplasty address different aspects of the nose; the right plan depends on an examination and the cause of your symptoms.

Describe what breathing feels like

Note whether the difficulty affects one side or both, whether it is constant or intermittent, and whether it began after injury or surgery. Mention previous nasal treatment and other symptoms. This is information for an assessment, not a way to diagnose yourself online. Ask which parts of the airway need to be evaluated.

Ask what each part of the operation is intended to do

Procedure names can be confusing. Ask the surgeon to explain which proposed steps address appearance and which address function. If septal surgery or work on nasal support is suggested, ask what finding supports that recommendation. Clarify which clinician will evaluate your breathing and who will perform each part of treatment.

Keep function in the discussion about shape

Bring up breathing when discussing a narrower bridge, smaller tip or nostril changes. Ask how the planned alteration relates to support and airflow. Discuss the possibility of persistent or new breathing problems and how they would be assessed after surgery. A cosmetic photograph does not tell you how well a patient breathes.

Bring these questions to the surgeon.

  • What appears to be causing my breathing difficulty?
  • Do I need an ENT assessment or other investigation before deciding?
  • Which parts of your plan address function and which address appearance?
  • How will you assess breathing during follow-up?
What a useful consultation gives you

Ask for a plan that explicitly addresses your breathing concerns alongside your aesthetic goals.
